1 Learn the concept
Branding is what makes a business unique and memorable. It is the sum of how a business looks, sounds and behaves, and what people feel when they think of it. Companies use branding to differentiate themselves from competitors and to build loyalty. This lesson explains the basics: what a brand is, what it is made of and why consistency matters.
2 See it in action
- A brand is more than a logo: it includes voice, values, visuals and experience.
- Branding sets expectations and builds trust.
- Consistency across channels makes a brand recognizable.
- A strong brand makes marketing easier and more efficient.
Worked example
A one-page brand snapshot
Brand: a neighborhood coffee shop.
Visual: warm brown and cream, a hand-drawn cup logo, photos of real regulars.
Verbal: friendly and plainspoken, names drinks simply, signs notes "See you tomorrow."
Experience: staff remember orders, a loyalty card, cups washed and reused for dine-in.
Values: local sourcing and everyone is welcome.
Check: if you hid the logo, could a customer still tell it was this café from the voice, the service and the look?
3 Study an example
Real-world case study
Mailchimp: changing a brand to match a changing business
What they did. In 2018 Mailchimp rebranded to signal its evolution from an email marketing tool to a larger marketing platform. The changes covered its logo, color palette, typeface and imagery, and the company standardized its wordmark as "Mailchimp" rather than "MailChimp".
What happened. The change shows how many parts make up a brand: look, type, imagery and even the way a name is written all changed together, so every place a customer met the company matched the new direction. The sources describe the changes rather than measuring the results.
What to take away. A brand is a system, not a logo. When the business changes, the visual, verbal and experience parts need to change together and be written down so everyone applies them the same way.
This case describes what changed. It does not claim results from the rebrand.
