Measuring Engagement

To improve your Instagram strategy, you need to analyze your data.

1 Learn the concept

To improve your Instagram strategy, you need to analyze your data. Engagement measures how people respond to your content through likes, comments, shares and saves. It shows which posts connect and which do not. This lesson explains the key metrics and how to turn them into decisions.

The engagement rate formula with a worked exampleENGAGEMENT RATEEngagement rate = (Likes + Comments + Shares + Saves) ÷Reach × 100Example(120 + 18 + 12 + 30) ÷ 3,000 × 100 = 6%Use reach, not follower count, for a single post.Compare similar posts and time periods.
A rate lets you compare posts of different sizes.

2 See it in action

  • Reach and impressions show visibility.
  • Likes, comments, shares and saves show interest.
  • Compare posts by type to see what works.
  • Track trends monthly, not just single posts.

Worked example

Comparing a photo and a carousel

Photo: reach 4,000, 140 likes, 6 comments, 4 shares, 10 saves. Engagement rate is 160 ÷ 4,000 = 4%.

Carousel: reach 3,000, 120 likes, 18 comments, 12 shares, 30 saves. Engagement rate is 180 ÷ 3,000 = 6%.

Reading: the carousel reached fewer people but drew far more saves, which signals value.

Decision: make more carousels for tips, and use photos for personality.

3 Study an example

Example scenario
