1 Learn the concept
Your value as a freelancer is determined by how well you solve client problems. Clients rarely hire you for a list of tasks; they hire you to get something fixed, built or improved. A clear problem-solving process helps you understand what is really wrong, explore options and recommend a solution with confidence. This lesson introduces a simple framework you can use on any project.
2 See it in action
- Define the problem: ask what is wrong, why it matters and what success looks like.
- Find the cause: separate symptoms from root causes.
- Generate options and weigh them by effort, cost and impact.
- Recommend one option and explain your reasoning.
Worked example
From a request to the real problem
Client request: "We need more Instagram followers."
Questions: why do you want them? What would more followers change? What happens when someone follows you today?
Finding: the real goal is more bookings, and most bookings come from the website.
Options: a follower campaign (slow, uncertain), a booking-focused campaign (direct), or a website fix (fast).
Recommendation: fix the booking path first, then run a small campaign to it. The client agrees because it addresses the real goal.
3 Study an example
Example scenario
A client says, "We need more Instagram followers." By asking questions, the freelancer learns the real goal is more bookings. She recommends a booking-focused campaign instead of chasing followers, and the client agrees because the solution matches the problem.
