Knowing how much to charge and how to manage money is a core part of freelancing.

1 Learn the concept

Knowing how much to charge and how to manage money is a core part of freelancing. Income can vary from month to month, you pay your own taxes in many places and costs such as software and equipment come out of your pocket. This lesson explains how to set your rate, track income and expenses, and plan for taxes and slow months. Rules differ by country, so check the requirements where you work.

A formula for an hourly freelance rate with a worked exampleFINDING YOUR HOURLY RATERate = (Income + Costs + Taxes) ÷ Billable hoursExample($4,000 + $600 + $1,200) ÷ 80 hours = $72.50 per hourBillable hours are fewer than hours worked, because admin and marketing are unpaid.Costs include software, equipment and insurance.Check the tax rules where you live.
Add up what you need to earn and divide by the hours you can really bill.

2 See it in action

  • Rate: start from the income you need, add costs and taxes, then divide by billable hours.
  • Invoicing: send clear invoices promptly and state payment terms.
  • Tracking: record income and expenses as they happen using accounting software or a spreadsheet.
  • Reserve money for taxes and quiet months.

Worked example

Setting a rate for one project

Monthly target: $4,000 income, $600 costs and $1,200 set aside for taxes, a total of $5,800.

Billable hours: you work about 120 hours a month, but only 80 are billable.

Math: $5,800 divided by 80 is $72.50 an hour.

Project quote: 10 estimated hours plus a 50 percent buffer is 15 hours, so $1,087.50.

Check: if clients say no, improve how you explain the value before you cut the rate.
