1 Learn the concept
Goals put you in the driver's seat of your career. Without them you react to whatever comes along; with them you choose where your effort goes. Good career goals are specific, measurable and tied to a date, and they are broken into steps small enough to start this week. This lesson shows you how to turn a vague wish like "get into marketing" into a plan you can act on.
2 See it in action
- Vague: "I want a marketing job." Specific: "I want an entry-level social media role at a small business within six months."
- Measurable: count what you control, such as applications sent, courses finished or conversations held each week.
- Time-bound: a date turns a wish into a deadline.
- Break it down: a six-month goal becomes monthly milestones and weekly actions.
Worked example
Turning a wish into a plan
Wish: "Get into marketing."
Goal: "Start a paid or unpaid marketing apprenticeship by 30 September."
Milestones: month 1, finish two courses and build a portfolio piece. Month 2, send 20 applications and hold 6 conversations. Month 3, interview and decide.
Weekly actions: 5 applications, 2 conversations, one lesson.
Check: each Friday, mark done or not done and adjust the next week.
3 Study an example
Example scenario
A student sets the goal "get better at marketing" and three months later cannot say whether she improved. She rewrites it as "finish two courses, complete one task for a real business and speak with three people in the industry within 60 days" and reviews it every Friday. At the end of the window she can point to exactly what she did.
4 Apply it and download
- Write one six-month career goal.
- Make it specific, measurable and dated.
