1 Learn the concept
Communicating through a screen is harder than in person. Tone is easy to misread, silence is hard to interpret and real connection takes more effort. Remote teams that do well write clearly, share progress often and give each other context. This lesson shows how to communicate effectively: what to put in writing, when to call and how to build relationships with people you rarely meet.
2 See it in action
- Be clear in writing: state the point first, then the detail.
- Overshare progress: short regular updates prevent confusion.
- Choose the right channel: quick questions in chat, complex topics on a call.
- Build trust: be responsive, keep promises and say thank you.
Worked example
Writing a weekly update
Done: published two blog posts and updated the pricing page.
Next: draft the April newsletter and review the ad results.
Blocked: I need the final product photos by Thursday.
Numbers: newsletter signups rose from 120 to 150 this week.
Check: a teammate should be able to read the update in under a minute and know what is needed from them.
3 Study an example
Real-world case study
GitLab: handbook-first, all-remote communication
What they did. GitLab describes its approach as all-remote, meaning a fully remote workforce, and documents how it works in a public handbook. Its handbook includes guidance on a handbook-first approach to communication and on working asynchronously, along with guides for remote onboarding, meetings and team culture.
What happened. By writing decisions and processes down in a shared place, people in different time zones can find answers and contribute without waiting for a live meeting. The sources describe the approach and do not publish a performance measure.
What to take away. Remote teams do better when information lives in writing where everyone can find it. Documenting decisions reduces repeated questions and makes asynchronous work possible.
The handbook pages describe GitLab's methods; this case does not measure results.
